우리 가족이 좀 이상하다는 건 항상 알고 있었다, 우선 나부터 그렇다

I always knew we were a fairly odd family. First there was me.

 

너무 길쭉하고 너무 빼빼하고 머리도 너무 오렌지 색이다

Too tall. Too skinny. Too orange.

 

우리 엄만 사랑스러운 분이었지만 보통 엄마들과는 다른 면이 많았다

My mum was lovely, but not like other mums.

 

엄만 아주 독립적인 분이셨다. 독특하면서 늘 바쁘고 냉철하셨다. 엄마의 패션 아이콘은 퀸이었다

There was something solid about her. Something rectangular, busy and unsentimental. Her fashion icon was the Queen.

 

아빤 좀 더 평범하셨다 항상 시간이 남아도는 분이셨다

Dad, well, he was more normal. He always seemed to have time on his hands.

 

 

50세 생신 때 대학에서 학생들 가르치는 걸 그만두면서 이젠 얘기도 하고 나한테 탁구도 져주시면서 여생을 여유롭게 사시게 됐다

After giving up teaching university students on his 50th birthday, he was eternally available for a leisurely chat or to let me win at table tennis. Ahh! Oh, yes.

 

그리고 엄마의 동생 데스몬드 삼촌도 있다

And then there was Mum's brother, Uncle Desmond.

 

삼촌은 늘 흠잡을 데 없이 옷을 입는다 그렇게 차려입고 별다른 일은 안 하신다

Always impeccably dressed. He spent the days just, well, being Uncle Desmond.

 

삼촌은 아주 매력적이고 영리한 사람이었다

He was the most charming and least clever man you could ever meet.

 

항상 다른 생각을 하고 사는 분이셨지만 그게 뭔지 우린 결국 알아내지 못했다

His mind was on other things, though we never found out what.

 

그리고 마지막으로 캐서린 - 케이티, 킷캣이라고 부르기도 하는 내 여동생이다

And then, finally there was Catherine. Katie. Kit Kat. My sister.

 

분별 있는 재킷과 헤어컷 가족들 사이에 천상의 아이가 있는 거다

In a household of sensible jackets and haircuts there was this, well, what can I call her, nature thing.

 

요정 같은 눈과 보라색 티셔츠 항상 벗고 있는 발, 그때도 그랬지만 지금도 마찬가지다. 그 아인 세상에서 가장 근사한 존재다

With her elfin eyes, her purple T-shirts and her eternally bare feet, she was then, and still is to me, about the most wonderful thing in the world.
